Alopecia Areata commonly affects younger women and children. It is an auto-immune condition, where the blood in the body forms white cells that attack the hair follicles which produce hair. It causes hair growth to stop as the follicle enters a resting phase of its cycle, leading to hair loss.
Most cases of alopecia areata starts with small patches that can be visible through the hair and feel silky smooth. These small patches can appear all of a sudden.
It is a very unpredictable type of hair loss. For many people it could be just a few patches and then the hair all grows back, where as in other cases people can experience rapid hair loss which sometimes results in total hair loss. In most cases the hair does grow back, and either stay that way or go through phases of growing and then losing the hair again
